Q. Jim P. of Oregon asks: "What's a QMCSO?"
A. Brett, from the QDRO Department of Pension Evaluators & QDROS Of Troyan, Inc
Associates Groupreplies: "QMCSO is an acronym for
Qualified Medical Child Support Order. It is designed to provide health coverage to a child of an employee through
his or her employer's group health plan.
The QMCSO process occurs through the court system and has become very popular
within claims of child support because, under this type of order, this
type of income is not treated as taxable income.
A medical child support order becomes qualified as a QMCSO if it satisfies
the employer's legal and administrative qualification requirements.
The employer's QMCSO process is guided by the Employee Retirement
Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) and the employer's group health
plan."
